Ocala, Greystone (17FL) The first Sunday of each month offers the rare opportunity to brunch at the most exclusive fly-in community in Florida, Jumbolair. Located about 8 n.m. north of Ocala, it boasts a 7,550' x 250' runway within a private, gated community, surrounded by an abundance of natural beauty. As is this exclusive community, the brunch at Jumbolair is one to also be experienced.... Our [first] visit was on super bowl Sunday, thinking it might be a bit slower than most Sundays, but en contraire. Likewise, the AIRMET for moderate turbulence below 10,000’ feet did not hinder fly-in attendance. Flying in to Jumbolair was reminiscent of flying into Oshkosh, the only difference was announcing one’s intentions on CTAF rather than rocking one’s wings at controller instructions. At 20 south, we dialed in to Greystone’s CTAF (122.7) to catch the early birds arrivals. By 10:00 they began converging on 17FL, including multiple “flights of two” or more making their way into the pattern at this one-of-a-kind fly-in community and resort. Upon our arrival, parking moved along quickly and was well orchestrated by line crew. Parking is on the south west end of runway 18/36. Note the concrete blast fence (above) For those of you unfamiliar with Greystone 17FL, from parking to restaurant, you walk through a tunnel in the massive 20’+ high concrete blast fence. The expanse of asphalt and concrete turns to a serenely beautiful country setting including a backdrop of horses grazing in pastures enclosed with split rail fences. Their Boeing 707 parks just outside their home. |
