High Jacker's Restaurant, Bunnell, Flagler County Airport - KXFL
Submitted on February 17, 2008 @ 10:51 pm An impressive website and extensive menu got KXFL high on my list new places to visit. Being that the Daytona 500 was being run, a flight to Daytona and a walk to Sonny's BBQ seemed out of the question. High Jacker's at Flagler County/Bunnell it was! The airport facility is good. The runways are in good condition and the taxiways are scarce, so ground navigation for the unfamiliar pilot is a cinch. Parking in front of the restaurant is also readily available. The atmosphere is good, and this is a place I'd love to come back to with a buddy flying and so I can have a few beers. It has a sports bar/small back country feel to it in many ways. The food: The fried clam strip sandwich is excellent. It could probably have been a little more dressed up, but the homemade potato chips held up just fine. The beer cheese soup, which excited me, was a complete disaster. Agreed upon by my fiancé, her friend, and myself, it tasted like little more than Velveeta without the macaroni. Oddly, as it cooled it became thinner. Who knows? The pulled pork sandwich scored big with the friend (who is from North Carolina and knows such things), but the chicken sandwich came on soggy bread and needed some fat trimming much to the fiancé’s disappointment. Overall, the KXFL experience was good. High Jacker's has great GREAT atmosphere and I'd love to watch the Red Sox take the Yankees down on the TV's inside (we sat outside - there are tables in a screen room and picnic benches completely outside) and knock back a few cold ones (no airplane involved). The food is at best mediocre, not bad, with the atmosphere scoring the most points and a making an occasion appropriate return a real possibility. Jason L.
